Mashishi: A Journey Through Art

Born in 1975 in the humble village of Driefontein, Limpopo, Mmutla Mashishi’s love for art started at a young age. After matriculating from Refiloe High School, Mashishi pursued his passion for creativity as a self-taught artist, always driven by his deep love for the craft. He later expanded his skills by completing a certificate course in Horticulture and Landscaping from INTEC College.

Mashishi's professional journey began in 2001 when he worked alongside renowned artist Anton Smit at Anton Smit Studios, a collaboration that lasted until 2005. He then collaborated with Angus Taylor from 2006 to 2007 and again in 2013, further honing his artistic skills.

From 2008 to 2009, Mashishi shared his expertise as an art facilitator at Witbank Correctional Services, and from 2010 to 2012, he continued this role at Sonder Water Correctional Services. His time in these roles demonstrated his commitment to nurturing talent and fostering creativity in unexpected places.

In 2014, Mashishi transitioned to work with D'Nokasi Crafters as an independent art facilitator, where he remained until 2021. During this period, he cultivated his own unique style, eventually taking the leap to work as a fully independent artist.

Today, Mmutla Mashishi continues to create thought-provoking art, drawing from his diverse experiences across the South African landscape. His journey reflects not only his passion for the arts but also his commitment to sharing it with others.
