Embark on a journey with Patrick Rulore as he captures the interplay of light and darkness in his poignant artworks.
In 1995, Patrick Rulore was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, where his artistic journey began. After matriculating in 2013, he immersed himself in portrait commissions, honing his craft before pursuing formal education. In 2020, Rulore completed his National Diploma in Fine Art at Tshwane University of Technology. His talent quickly gained recognition, with his work making it to the Top 100 of the prestigious Sasol New Signatures competition in 2017. By 2018, he had secured the Top Painting accolade at the same competition, marking him as a rising star.
A deep exploration of light and shadow
Rulore’s artistic journey is deeply rooted in his exploration of light and shadow. His notable artwork "Stage 4 Moments" won the 2019 Sasol New Signatures Award, propelling him into the spotlight. This work, which reflects on South Africa’s power cuts, became the centrepiece of his first solo exhibition, "Stage 4 Moments, Life in Darkness," held at the Pretoria Art Museum in 2021.
Recognition and accolades
Rulore’s accomplishments didn't stop there. His entry for the Thami Mnyele Art Award was among the top 15 in 2019, and in 2021, he again made it to the top 20. His skill and dedication were further acknowledged when his work was shortlisted for the Goethe Institute Henrike Grohs Award in 2022.

From India’s Delhi in 2015 to Art Alive in Brooklyn in 2017, to shows closer to home such as the Pretoria Penthouse in 2015, Centurion Art Gallery in 2018, and Pretoria Arts Association in 2021, his reach continues to expand. In 2023, he participated in shows at the Bag Factory Artist Studios and Sasol Gallery, showcasing his evolving style and growing influence.
In 2024, Rulore’s exploration of light and shadow will be at the forefront once again in his exhibition, "Ink and Brushes: Light, Shadow, Grisaille" at Gallery One.
