Sibusiso Makhunga's innocent paintings display a yearning barely articulated. Either one values the artist's innocence - the work's purity - or, if doubtful and ironic, one might prematurely declare - NO. What we witness when looking at Makhunga's paintings is a yearning for honesty, a sensitivity to the unsung - the often forgotten truth of black life. Njabulo Ndebele described this hidden truth superbly when he contrasted the Spectacular with the Ordinary - Black Life as the spectalurisation of abjection-pain-horror instead of a quiet incidental poetry. Sibusiso Makhunga has chosen to explore the latter.
