Sthembiso Zwane is the assistant printmaker at Prints on Paper and a full-time artist and printmaker based in Johannesburg. His paintings and prints attempt to express a sense of humanity and the idea of hope by highlighting moods, emotions and social sensibilities.
These ideas are often concentrated solely on the face of his subjects, which are often portraits of elderly men and women who have reached a ripe old age.
Zwane studied printmaking at Artist Proof Studio (2009 – 2010) where he obtained a certificate. He has participated in a number of group exhibitions, including the Print Portfolio Exchange, Sasol New Signatures Competition, and Thami Mnyele Fine Arts Awards.
Zwane’s captivating portraits are such that one cannot merely glance across them and assume that they are thereby known. On the contrary, we look and cannot stop looking.
On the contrary Zwane’s portraits are the fretwork of
a beguiling infinity. We look and cannot stop looking.
