On Sunday, 18 August, we hosted an iconic sip’n print event guided by artist Lebohang Sithole as part of his ‘Kasi Lullaby’ solo exhibition in the Asisebenze gallery. Guests took a deep dive into the practice of printmaking, surrounded by the inspiring works in his exhibition, which draws from the rich, multifaceted life in eKasi.
Lebohang’s vision for the exhibition stems from his desire to share positive, real stories of township life. In a recent interview, Sithole shared: “I want people to realise that my desire is to make sure that even a child from ekasi is considered as someone who can have this dream of being an artist.”
His passion for using art to mentor and uplift his community set the tone for the event, where participants not only created art but also engaged with the deeper narratives behind his works.
A transformation of creativity and community
Guests were handed perspex plates along with nails and screws to etch their designs, following a demonstration of the printmaking process. Lebohang and his team ensured that guests were guided and supported throughout, turning what began as quiet concentration into a lively and joyful gathering.
Laughter and smiles lit up the room as each person’s artwork took shape – a direct reflection of the sense of community that defines both the exhibition and the deconstructed event series.
The Sip ‘n Print session was the concluding interactive event of Lebohang’s solo show at Asisebenze. It featured sections that explored his personal experiences, including his work in theatre to the role of eKasi games in shaping young minds, and even a music section inspired by his connection to his late grandfather.
He explained: “I want people to understand the many different parts that make up life in ekasi. It’s not all bad. We have happy stories, we have good times, we laugh, we smile, we live.”
