The title for this show – comes from Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet. The prologue speaks of ‘two households … alike in dignity’, which nevertheless hold grudges against each other. In this case, the ‘grudge’, or tension, is between abstraction and figuration. Our job is to rub them together, generate a healthy conflict, inspire complexity, thereby extending the existing market and debunking the prejudicial perception of Contemporary African Art as a fly-by-night genre, style, or taste.
