Kasi Lullaby

A solo exhibition featuring Lebohang Sithole

The next iteration of our DECONTRUCTED solo exhibition series, “Kasi Lullaby”, by artist, Lebohang Sithole, is a multifaceted showing, which seeks to express the many narratives of life lived in eKasi (vernacular term for the ghetto).

Whilst Sithole’s main objective with this collection of works is to provide a voice to the voiceless of those often living in the peripheries of society, and those marginalised existing in impoverished areas. What “Kasi Lullaby” does is simultaneously share positive and uplifting narratives which exist amidst the hardships of poverty, violence and hopelessness, whilst not ignoring the darker realities which hover eternally over those who live within these realities.

The multiplicity of themes and narratives within this Kasi Lullaby exhibition is further emphasized by the sectioning off of different zones within this exhibition. This zoning of elements functions not only as a means to segment the mediums used within this exhibit, but simultaneously as a means to mimic the landscape and confined settings of eKasi. What this exhibition aims to do, is act as a soothing presence for all those familiar with life in eKasi. Some might be so bold as to assume that Lebohang Sithole aims this collection of artworks and their presentation to serve as a form of comfort which relaxes and calms, much like a lullaby would.
