About the Exhibition:
‘Ubomi’ is a deeply reflective and visually powerful body of work that explores themes of creation, identity, and life. Siphamandla Ex’s bold use of black backgrounds against brightly coloured plants and female figures offers a striking visual contrast that challenges traditional ideas of representation in art. By setting these life-giving elements against a void-like black backdrop, Ex reclaims and celebrates Black identity as a source of strength, renewal, and beauty.
This exhibition is a culmination of Siphamandla Ex’s journey through collaboration and introspection. By engaging with indigenous poets and fellow artists, Ex expands the boundaries of his own practice, relinquishing control to gain fresh perspectives and deeper insights into his work. The result is an exhibition that is not only visually stunning but also deeply resonant with cultural and historical significance.
Through ‘Ubomi’, Ex invites audiences to see life in its many forms – from the nurturing power of women to the vital energy of nature. His portrayal of female figures, plants, and the use of vernacular language in the titles and accompanying poetry further enhance the connection between art and the cultural narratives that inspire it.
