2023: A year of growth!

Asisebenze Art Atelier has kept a busy schedule in 2023 as we continue to build this unique art partnership focused on growing our artists and their reputations.

In the year so far, the Asisebenze flag has flown proudly at high-profile events including Cape Town Art Fair, Open Studios Joburg, Turbine Art Fair 2023 and the Inner City Views exhibition at the Sanlam Gallery.

We started the year with our bitter-sweet debut at the Cape Town Art Fair. Our participation was centred on the exhibition "Man of the Hour", a solo offering of abstract paintings from the late South African artist, Samson Mnisi.

The Open Studios Joburg 2023 event, which took place on the weekend of May 27 and 28, was a vibrant celebration of Johannesburg's dynamic art scene, offering a rare opportunity to explore artists' studios across the city, engage with over 150 artists, and purchase artworks directly from them.

This event was the biggest edition yet, involving seven main artist studio collectives and more than 100 artists showcasing a rich array of activations, exhibitions, and other art happenings.

In a departure from our 2022 debut at the Turbine Art Fair when we showcased the full depth and breadth of artistic talent in our stable, we elected to focus all attention this year on Fumani Walter Maluleke.

This decision was soon justified as visitors were instantly drawn to his scenes of rural Limpopo life rendered on traditional grass mats. His works touched many visitors who were transported to their childhoods through the familiar scenes that Maluleke has depicted.

A significant step toward our vision of creating a viable fine art ecosystem was taken with sponsorship from  Sanlam Private Wealth, when we hosted a three-month exhibition at the Sanlam art gallery in Sandton.

The works on display were rotated every month, giving art collectors the opportunity to meet the artists, view their creations and add to their collections.

Titled  Inner City Views,  the exhibition was  officially  opened on 10 May 2023 to a private audience of invited guests.

Our artists continue to exhibit their works around the country, and the globe for that matter, as they build their profile and bodies of work.
