2024 has been a trans-formative year for Asisebenze Art Atelier, packed with innovative exhibitions, engaging events, and opportunities for art enthusiasts to immerse themselves in Johannesburg’s vibrant creative culture. Across the months, the studio brought art to life in unexpected ways, offering a mix of visual exploration, hands-on experiences, and thought-provoking themes that left a lasting impact on attendees.

“Our focus this year was to ensure that art wasn’t just something to admire from afar,” shares Tanya Krain, General Manager of Asisebenze Art Atelier. “We wanted people to experience it, to feel it, and to see themselves reflected in it. This has been at the heart of everything we’ve done in 2024.”

Through the Deconstructed Series, the studio delved into personal and collective narratives, with exhibitions like Siphamandla Ex's "Ubomi," Lebohang Sithole's "Kasi Lullaby," and Mbali Tshabalala's "Fragments of Infinity." These shows combined striking visuals with deep commentary on identity, culture, and society. Sifiso Mkhabela’s "Concrete Cocoon" opened the year with a bold exploration of Johannesburg's urban story, setting the tone for a season of meaningful reflection.

Tanya explains, “The Deconstructed Series gave us a platform to push boundaries—not just in how art is created, but in how it’s presented and interpreted by our audiences. It’s been exciting to see these conversations unfold.”

The studio also embraced community-focused events like Sip ‘n Paint and Sip ‘n Print, inviting participants to create their own works inspired by the exhibitions. These gatherings became moments of connection, where laughter, inspiration, and a shared passion for creativity brought people together.

Asisebenze further solidified its role as a key player in the art scene with its participation in Contra Fair Joburg, showcasing the studio’s ability to merge accessibility with sophistication. “From seasoned collectors to first-time art buyers, we’ve seen an incredible spectrum of people engage with our work,” says Krain.

Through intimate studio events, captivating exhibitions, and moments of artistic collaboration, Asisebenze Art Atelier turned 2024 into a year of growth, creativity, and unforgettable experiences. “Art is for everyone,” Krain concludes. “And we’re proud to be a space where people feel that deeply.”
