Contra Fair Joburg 2024, previously known as Open Studios Joburg, brought a vibrant burst of creativity to the heart of Joburg on the weekend of 25 and 26 May. Asisebenze Art Atelier (AAA) was thrilled to participate for the third time, joining 12 other studios and art spaces to open their doors to the public.
This event provided art enthusiasts with a unique opportunity to meet artists in their own environments and discover new and inspiring works.
Our participation in the fair was a resounding success, with nearly 350 signing up for the weekend’s art exploration extravaganza.
Our studio doors were open on Sunday, 26 May from 10am to 5pm, with visitors flowing through to more than 20 studios spread over six floors. The event proved to be both thrilling and rewarding, with artworks available for purchase directly from the artists.
The safe, underground parking at 76 Joubert Street made it convenient for families to attend, and the kiddies' art area, complete with face painting, ensured that even the youngest visitors had a memorable experience.
One of the highlights of the day was the series of raffle draws that saw three lucky visitors walk away with artworks valued at over R50,000. The lucky draws featured works from notable artists Tawanda MuAfrika, Mashir Kresenchun, Phanuel Shivambu and Philip Mabote.
The hop-on-hop-off shuttles were a hit, allowing visitors to effortlessly travel between art spaces without the hassle of driving or parking. This feature enabled art lovers to fully immerse themselves in the experience, exploring the creative energy of Johannesburg's CBD at their own pace.
