Freedom as practice: Art, responsibility, and the work of being free

April, known as Freedom Month in South Africa, marks a pivotal moment in our history, the first democratic elections. It reminds us not only of how far we have come, but of the ongoing work of shaping a more just and expressive society. But what does freedom mean today, especially within art?

Art has always lived at the intersection of resistance and possibility. When voices were silenced, art carried truth across boundaries. It documented, questioned, mourned, and imagined new realities.

Today, in a democratic South Africa, that role has not disappeared, it has deepened. Freedom in art is often seen as the ability to create without limitation. To say what must be said. To explore identity, memory, and desire without fear.

But true creative freedom asks more of us.

It asks:

What stories are we telling? Who is being represented, and who is left out? How do our creative choices shape the world around us?

For the viewer, this matters too. Engaging with art is not passive. It invites you to think, to question, and to see differently. Experience art as a shared responsibility.

At Asisebenze, art is not just displayed, it is lived. This is not just a gallery. It is a space where creativity, community, and culture meet. A space where artists and audiences come together to reflect, challenge, and grow. Every artwork becomes a point of connection. A moment where personal truth meets collective experience.

And with that comes responsibility.

To create freely is also to create with awareness. To recognise that every voice exists in conversation with history, community, and the future. In this way, art becomes a space of care, where expression is grounded in intention and respect.

Step into the practice of freedom.

Freedom is not something we simply inherit. It is something we practice. It shows up in how we create. How we listen. How we respond to the stories around us.

Freedom Month invites you to be part of that practice, not just as an observer, but as a participant. Step inside Asisebenze and experience how art moves, connects, and transforms. Because freedom is not only about being heard, it is about how we choose to engage, reflect, and create together.

Visit the gallery and be part of the movement.
