We are thrilled to announce an exciting new chapter in our journey of fostering artistic talent in Joburg's vibrant inner city with our inaugural Photographer-in-Residence programme. We couldn't be more excited to introduce Nomonde Kananda as the first artist to take up this role.
The Photographer-in-Residence Programme at Asisebenze Art Atelier (AAA) is designed to provide an unparalleled opportunity for up-and-coming photographers like Nomonde. It allows them to develop their skills and build their freelance business without the pressure of studio and living space costs.
During her residency, Nomonde will have the freedom to document the people, happenings, and events at AAA, offering our followers an insider's peek into the life at 28 Plein Street. Nomonde, born in Gauteng, is a fine art photographer whose journey through the lens began with a Foundation Course in Photography at The Market Photo Workshop, followed by a Mid-Level Course in Photography at Through The Lens Collective in 2022.
Her work, deeply rooted in exploring her internal and external environments, has been showcased in various group exhibitions. These include ‘Misconceptions’ at The Mareledi Center for Arts, ‘A Meeting of Minds’ at Space Mecca Studio, and ‘The Nature of Photography’ and ‘Everything, Everyone, Always’ by Through The Lens Collective.
In 2022, Nomonde's talent was recognised on a continental level when she was selected as one of 60 female identifying artists in Africa to be part of ‘Reshape 22: Future African Histories,’ an exhibition hosted by Latitudes Online.
Her growing impact in the field was further solidified when she was chosen as one of six African Photographers for a mentorship programme by The European Union in South Africa, in partnership with Through The Lens Collective. This mentorship culminated in the ‘Notions of Home, Identity, and Belonging’ exhibition at The Javett Center at The University of Pretoria in 2023.
Nomonde's appointment as Asisebenze Photographer-in-Residence is not just a milestone for her but a testament to our commitment to nurturing and showcasing the rich tapestry of African art and culture. We are eagerly looking forward to sharing Nomonde's body of work over the term of her residency.
This initiative is more than just a programme: it's a bridge connecting emerging talent with the community, providing a platform for artists to weave their narratives into the fabric of African art history.
Stay tuned to our website and social media channels as we share updates, behind-the-scenes looks, and the unique stories captured through Nomonde's lens. Her journey at Asisebenze Art Atelier is bound to inspire and captivate, offering a unique view of the dynamic and cosmopolitan spirit that defines our artistic home.
Join us in welcoming Nomonde Kananda to the AAA family. Together, we're set to embark on a journey that celebrates creativity, explores new perspectives, and captures the essence of life at Asisebenze Art Atelier through the art of photography.
