On August 4th, the Asisebenze gallery opened its doors to art enthusiasts for the unveiling of ‘Kasi Lullaby’, an exhibition by resident artist Lebohang Sithole. This event provided them with an immersive experience that explores the lived realities of those who grew up in South Africa's informal settlements, offering a deep connection to the heart of Jozi’s cultural landscape.
The exhibition material is equally a personal reflection of Lebohang’s lived experiences, which led him to express his artistic talents with what he had around him: the charcoal used to heat the home and cook food.
Necessity soon turned to passion as he has explored and expressed the influence of eKasi life through his charcoal works on display in his solo show at Asisebenze.
Exploring eKasi culture through art
But ‘Kasi Lullaby’ is more than just an exhibition — it’s an invitation to experience the vibrant and complex world of South Africa’s townships. The gallery space has been meticulously arranged to reflect the physical and emotional landscapes of these communities.
Various sections of the gallery symbolise the fragmented yet deeply interconnected nature of township life. Lebohang’s narration added depth and authenticity as he shared stories that connected his personal experiences with broader social and cultural themes.
One especially poignant moment focused on his relationship with his late grandfather, a figure whose influence is strongly felt throughout the exhibition.
Interactive art experiences
The opening was not just about viewing art but also participating in the creative process. Guests had the opportunity to engage in a kasi games experience, reminiscent of the games played in the streets by township children.
This was followed by a hands-on printing demonstration, where Sithole and fellow resident artists set up a pop-up print studio. Attendees tried their hand at the pancake method of printmaking, rolling ink and experiencing the magic of creating an artist’s print first-hand.
To complete the immersive township experience, guests were treated to traditional kotas, a beloved township street food. This culinary touch brought an added layer of authenticity to the exhibition, reinforcing the cultural themes Sithole aimed to convey.
‘Kasi Lullaby’ at the Asisebenze gallery is not just an exhibition; it’s a cultural journey through the heart of Jozi. Lebohang Sithole’s work invites you to step into the township, feel its rhythms, and engage with the stories that shape its identity.
