On the first Sunday of October, Asisebenze Art Atelier hosted the final exhibition of its 2024 DECONSTRUCTED series, Ubomi (Life), showcasing the work of Siphamandla Ex. A lively crowd gathered from midday to experience Ex’s powerful approach to Black identity, life, and creation, and this became the series' most attended exhibition yet.
At the core of Ubomi is Ex’s vision to reclaim Black identity, using black canvases as both a backdrop and a bold statement. His vibrant, large-scale works, showing strong female figures and lush, brightly-coloured plants, were made to reject harmful stereotypes and offer a positive, complex representation.
One of the day’s highlights was the collaboration between Ex and local poets, who performed pieces inspired by the artwork.
Their powerful words, delivered in indigenous languages, added fresh layers of meaning, giving the audience more to connect with and consider. “I wanted this show to make people feel deeply,” Ex explained, “and the poetry brings another dimension to that experience.”
Ex also invited Asisebenze’s general manager, Tanya Krain, to co-create three pieces for Ubomi, bringing a surprising new energy to the show. “Working with Ex pushed me out of my comfort zone,” Tanya shared. “The result feels like a true conversation in art.” Their collaboration sparked conversation among the attendees, many of whom stayed to discuss the themes of the show in small groups.
For those who missed it, there’s still a chance to experience Ubomi’s themes firsthand at our upcoming Sip ‘n Paint on Sunday, 20 October. Led by Ex, this event lets attendees create their own works inspired by the exhibition in a relaxed, collaborative setting.
